Amazon Payment Declined: How to Fix It
Amazon rejects your card at checkout, or an order gets put on hold with a "payment method declined" message.
Try these in order
- Re-check the card details you entered. A wrong number, expiry date, or billing address is the simplest cause, and Amazon Pay support can verify what's on the order (Amazon Pay).
- Update the payment method on the suspended order. Sign in, find the order marked "Update payment method," click Manage, then Update payment method and pick a different card (Amazon Pay).
- Call your bank. For privacy reasons your bank won't tell Amazon why it declined, so you need to ask them directly — even if the card worked yesterday or has plenty of funds (Amazon Pay).
- Ask whether a security flag is blocking it. Banks often flag first-time orders or unusually large purchases and may need your verbal approval to release the charge (Amazon Pay).
- Check your daily spending limit. Most banks cap how much can be charged in one day and will block anything above it regardless of your balance (Amazon Pay).
- Look for held authorisations. Order changes, cancellations, or split shipments can each reserve funds, and some banks hold those for 7-10 business days, making your card look maxed out (Amazon Pay).
Still stuck? Once your bank clears the block, add the card again or choose another payment method — the order will move back to Processing once the payment goes through (Amazon Pay).
