ChatGPT Not Responding or Won't Load: How to Fix It
ChatGPT is stuck loading, won't generate a response, or throws an error when you try to send a message.
Try these in order
- Check OpenAI's status page first at status.openai.com — if there's a service-wide outage, nothing on your end will fix it; you just have to wait.
- Log out and back in — this alone resolves a large share of "won't respond" cases.
- Try incognito/private browsing to rule out a corrupted cache or a conflicting browser extension (ad blockers and privacy extensions are common culprits).
- Clear your browser's cache and cookies, then reload.
- Turn off any active VPN — some VPN and proxy connections interfere with ChatGPT's requests.
- Switch networks or devices — try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, or the ChatGPT phone app instead of the browser.
Still stuck? If OpenAI's status page shows all systems normal and you've tried the above, the issue may be account-specific — check for a service notice in your account settings or try again after a short wait.
