ChatGPT Voice Mode Not Working: How to Fix It

The voice button is missing, or you tap it and get an endless spinner, silence, or a conversation that cuts out after a few seconds.

Try these in order

  1. Grant microphone access. Tap the Voice icon in the message bar and allow the ChatGPT app to use your microphone when prompted; on the web, go to ChatGPT.com, select the Voice icon in the prompt window and allow your browser microphone access (OpenAI Help Center).
  2. Check you're not accidentally muted. During a conversation the microphone control mutes and unmutes you, and it's easy to leave it muted from a previous session (OpenAI Help Center).
  3. Update the ChatGPT app. If Live doesn't appear in your Voice settings, it may simply not have rolled out to you yet — availability depends on your plan, region, workspace and app version, so update first and fall back to Advanced or Standard Voice in the meantime (OpenAI Help Center).
  4. Switch to a different Voice option. Open Settings > Voice and try Advanced (needed for video and screen sharing) or Standard (turn-by-turn, transcribes your speech first) if Live won't connect (OpenAI Help Center).
  5. Cut down interruptions. Background noise, long pauses and other people's voices all confuse Voice — use headphones, move somewhere quieter, and turn up your device volume. On iPhone, open Control Center mid-conversation, select Mic Mode and turn on Voice Isolation (OpenAI Help Center).
  6. If there's no voice icon at all, check your plan. Click your profile picture at the bottom left or visit chatgpt.com/settings/account to confirm your plan, since the button doesn't exist for accounts without access rather than being a display bug (TechRoke).
  7. Turn off your VPN and test another network. Voice needs a sustained WebRTC connection, so VPN restrictions, an unsupported browser or network instability can cause a spinner that never connects or a session that drops after seconds (TechRoke).
Still stuck? Voice conversations legitimately end when you hit a usage limit, the maximum session length, or a long chat's context limit — and a single Live conversation can run up to 2 hours, so an ending session isn't always a fault (OpenAI Help Center). If it never starts in the first place, check status.openai.com for a service incident (OpenAI Status).
