Gmail Search Not Working: How to Fix It
Gmail search returns no results, misses emails you know exist, or doesn't work at all.
What exactly is happening?
Try these in order
- Make sure you're online. Gmail search doesn't work in offline mode (Gmail Help).
- Include Spam and Trash. Gmail leaves Spam and Trash out of search by default. Click the down arrow in the search box, choose Mail & Spam & Trash, then search (Gmail Help).
- Use filter chips or operators. Narrow results with From, To, Attachment, Date, or Is unread — or type operators like from:name or has:attachment (Gmail Help).
- Check the right tab for chats. To find chat messages, search, press Enter, then click Conversations (Gmail Help).
- Clear old searches. Click the search box, find a recent search, and click Delete. Saved suggestions need Web & App Activity turned on (Gmail Help).
- Try a different browser or the app. If search fails everywhere on one browser, clear its cache or use an incognito window to rule out extensions.
Still stuck? If an email truly doesn't show up even in Mail & Spam & Trash, it was likely permanently deleted or never arrived.
