Instagram Reels Not Playing: How to Fix It
Reels won't load, freeze on a black screen, play with no sound, or keep stopping partway through.
What exactly is happening?
Try these in order
- Update Instagram and your phone's software. Instagram's own troubleshooting starts here — an outdated app or operating system is a common cause of playback glitches (Instagram Help).
- Restart your phone. A full restart clears stuck memory and background processes that can stop video playback (Instagram Help).
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Try Reels on both — if they play on one but not the other, the connection is the problem, not the app (Instagram Help).
- Check your phone isn't on silent or low-power mode. Silent mode mutes Reels audio on many phones, and battery-saver modes can throttle video. Tap the speaker icon on the Reel to unmute.
- Delete and reinstall Instagram. On iPhone, press and hold the app → Remove App, then reinstall from the App Store. On Android, go to Settings → Apps → Instagram → Uninstall, then reinstall. Your photos and profile are saved to your account (Instagram Help).
- Report the bug. If none of this works, it may be a bug or a feature that isn't fully rolled out to everyone yet — report it from the app so Instagram can see it (Instagram Help).
Still stuck? If Reels are broken for everyone you know at the same time, it's probably an Instagram outage — wait an hour and try again rather than resetting your phone.
