Snapchat Camera Not Working: How to Fix It

Snapchat opens to a black screen, the camera freezes, or the picture is blurry and nothing you tap makes it come back to life.

Try these in order

  1. Restart the Snapchat app Fully close Snapchat and open it again — this refreshes the app and often gets the camera running immediately.
  2. Check your internet connection Switch between mobile data and Wi-Fi. Connection problems can affect how the camera works.
  3. Check for Snapchat updates Open the App Store or Google Play and make sure you're on the newest version of Snapchat.
  4. Restart your device Turn your phone off and back on again — this helps all your apps run better, including the camera.
  5. Make sure Snapchat has camera permission In your phone's app settings, confirm camera access is switched on for Snapchat.
  6. Clear your Snapchat cache In Settings, tap Clear Data, then Clear Cache. This frees up storage without deleting your Memories or Chats.
Still stuck? If switching networks fixed it temporarily, contact your mobile carrier or internet provider. Otherwise, test your phone's built-in camera app — if that's broken too, it's a phone issue rather than a Snapchat one.
