Telegram Phone Verification Code Not Arriving: How to Fix It
You've entered your phone number to sign up or sign in, but the Telegram verification code never turns up by SMS.
Try these in order
- Check Telegram on your other devices first If you've recently used Telegram elsewhere, the code is sent inside Telegram instead of by SMS — open the chat with the verified "Telegram" account on another phone, tablet, desktop app, or web.telegram.org (Telegram FAQ, ESIMPY).
- Check your country code and number Tap the flag and choose your country manually rather than relying on auto-detection, then re-enter the number with no spaces, dashes or duplicated country code (ESIMPY).
- Use "Call me instead" Wait for the SMS timer to run out, then tap the call option — Telegram phones you and reads the code aloud, bypassing SMS entirely (ESIMPY).
- Wait properly between attempts SMS usually arrives in 30–60 seconds but can take 5–15 minutes in some regions; leave a full 5 minutes between tries because repeated resends can lock you out for up to 24 hours (ESIMPY).
- Update the Telegram app Older versions can contain verification bugs that were fixed in later releases, so check your app store for an update (ESIMPY).
- Avoid VoIP numbers Numbers from services like Google Voice, Skype or TextNow are commonly filtered by Telegram; a normal mobile carrier number is far more reliable, and Telegram doesn't support landlines at all (ESIMPY, Telegram FAQ).
Still stuck? Look for a "Didn't receive the code?" prompt — if you set up a recovery email under Settings > Privacy and Security, Telegram may verify you by email (ESIMPY). Otherwise, contact Telegram through the login problems form on their FAQ page (Telegram FAQ).
