YouTube Video Won't Play: How to Fix It

You press play and get an error, a black screen, or endless buffering instead of the video.

Try these in order

  1. Check your internet speed Slow or capped connections are the number one cause of playback failures (YouTube Help).
  2. Switch your connection If you're on mobile data, try Wi-Fi; if you're on Wi-Fi, try mobile data, then replay the video (YouTube Help).
  3. Close and reopen the YouTube app Then restart your device and try the video again (YouTube Help).
  4. Make sure you're signed in Some videos won't play if you're signed out or if the content is age-restricted (YouTube Help).
  5. Turn off ad blockers and other extensions In a browser, extensions — especially ad blockers — commonly break the player (YouTube Help).
  6. Clear the app's cache On Android: Settings > Apps > YouTube > Storage > Clear cache, then replay (YouTube Help).
  7. Update the YouTube app or your browser Install the latest version, and on a TV power cycle the device and check for app updates (YouTube Help).
