PayPal Payment Failed: How to Fix It
You tried to send a payment and got a "Payment Failed" or declined error — and repeatedly retrying isn't fixing it.
Try these in order
- Don't immediately retry the same payment — repeated attempts can trigger additional security holds. Diagnose first.
- Check your card or bank details — an outdated expiration date or billing address is one of the most common causes.
- Confirm you have sufficient funds in your linked bank account, card, or PayPal balance.
- Check for an account limitation. Log into PayPal and look for a banner about a limited account — this blocks payments until resolved.
- Complete any pending identity verification. PayPal sometimes requires a security check before allowing a payment through.
- Remove and re-add your payment method — this clears out glitches tied to a stale card or bank link.
- Contact your bank directly — PayPal can't always see why a bank declined a charge; your bank can.
Still stuck? If your account shows no limitations and your funding source is confirmed valid, contact PayPal support directly — the block is likely tied to a security review that needs manual clearing.
