YouTube Picture-in-Picture Not Working: How to Fix It
YouTube won't keep playing in a small floating window when you leave the app.
What exactly is happening?
Try these in order
- Turn it on in your phone's settings. On Android, go to Settings → Apps → YouTube → Advanced → Picture-in-picture, and make sure Allow picture-in-picture is on (YouTube Help).
- Turn it on in YouTube too. In the YouTube app, go to Settings → Playback and toggle Picture-in-Picture on (YouTube Help).
- Don't pause before leaving. If you pause or stop the video before exiting the app, PiP won't start (YouTube Help).
- Check if it's music. Music videos, songs, and covers only work in PiP for YouTube Premium members (YouTube Help).
- Update YouTube and your phone. PiP depends on both the app and your operating system being current.
- Check your country. Free PiP for non-music videos isn't available everywhere, so some regions need Premium.
Still stuck? If PiP worked before and suddenly stopped after an update, reinstall the YouTube app and turn both settings back on.
