Venmo Account Frozen: How to Fix It
You open Venmo and find your account suspended or frozen — you can't send money, and some payments may have been reversed.
Try these in order
- Check your email inbox Venmo emails you whenever an account is suspended, payments are reversed, or documents are requested. That email explains exactly why.
- Check your spam folder If you can't find the email, look there before assuming you weren't contacted.
- Follow the in-app prompts if a payment failed If the freeze came from a failed bank payment, tap "Restore your account" in the app to start the recovery process.
- Make the recovery payment Pay back the amount owed. Using a debit card is the fastest option; paying from a bank account can take up to 5 business days to process.
- Make a partial payment if you can't cover it all Before tapping Pay, tap the payment amount and edit it to what you can afford. Any money you receive on Venmo is automatically applied to what you owe.
- Reply to the suspension email If your account was frozen for a reason other than a failed payment, reply directly to that email and provide any documents Venmo has requested.
Still stuck? Your account stays frozen until the recovery is complete, and Venmo emails you once it unfreezes. Ask your bank why the original transaction failed — Venmo can't see that reason, but your bank can.
